Corgi Events Rules & Regulations

These rules are intended to create a safe environment for all corgi and human participants.  Everyone is responsible for adhering to the highest possible safety standards.

Get ready for one of the highlights of Operation Short Legs—the corgi races! Cheer on these determined little racers as they charge toward the finish line.

Will your corgi stay focused on the mission—or go completely AWOL halfway down the course? Either way, it should be fun to watch.

Eligibility & Safety Requirements

• Signed Waiver Required: All participating corgi parents must sign an event liability waiver before their corgi can hit the track.
• Good Behavior: Corgis must be well-behaved and able to adapt to new environments.
• Vaccinations: Corgis must be current on vaccinations, including Rabies, Bordetella, and DA2PP/DHPP/DAPP.
• Spay/Neuter Requirement: Participating corgis must be spayed or neutered.
• Eligible Corgis: Open to Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Cardigan Welsh Corgis, and American Corgis (Pembroke/Cardigan mixes).
• Corgi Mixes: Corgi mixes with other breeds, including Cowboy Corgis or other non-corgi crossbreeds, are not eligible.
• Mobility: Corgis must be able to run or move independently. Wheelchair corgis are welcome.
• Race Attire: Corgis may wear a costume, bandana, or vest.
• Handler Requirements: Handlers must be able to safely participate, including releasing and catching their corgi and maintaining control at all times. The race area is active and fast-paced, so handlers must be able to stand, walk/run short distances, and react quickly for safety.

Official Race Rules

• Two Humans Required: Each participating corgi will need two humans. One human will carry the racer to the starting line. The other will stand at the finish line to catch the racing corgi. Humans must be able to safely carry and/or catch their corgi.
• Track Access: Only participating dogs are allowed on the track.
• Finish-Line Encouragement: Humans at the finish line may use toys or verbal encouragement to coax their corgi across the finish line but cannot cross the line or move toward the dog in any way. No lights, laser pointers, or items thrown down the track are allowed. NO FOOD/TREATS ALLOWED.
• No Throwing: Humans may not throw a toy, treat, ball, or other item across the finish line to coax their corgi.
• Starting Line: Humans may not physically push their corgi across the starting line.
• Noisemakers: No excessive noisemakers, including whistles or horns, are permitted.
• Be on Time: Any dog not at the starting line at the appointed time will be disqualified. A dog may also be disqualified if their name is called and they are not in the holding area.
• Final Authority: Judges will determine the final finish. Judges’ decisions are final.
• The Prize & Cause: Winners of each heat will receive an official Winner’s Certificate. All proceeds from the corgi races will be donated to a local dog rescue.

Racing Tip: Whoever retrieves the dog at the finish line should stand back 4–5 feet to give their corgi room to completely cross the finish line. Standing too close may cause your corgi to slow down before crossing.

🌭Chow Down Challenge

Corgis, report to the Mess Hall!

It’s time to find out who can make quick work of a hot dog! Corgis will compete to see who can finish their treat the fastest and claim bragging rights as the Operation Short Legs Chow Down Champion.

Eligibility & Safety Requirements

• Signed Waiver Required: All pet parents must sign an event liability waiver before their dog can enter the contest area. No exceptions.
• Good Health & Vaccinations: Participating Corgis must be in good health, fully vaccinated, and physically fit to consume treats.
• Zero-Tolerance Aggression Policy: Corgis are notoriously food-motivated. Any growling, snapping, resource guarding, or aggressive behavior toward other dogs, owners, or volunteers will result in immediate disqualification.
• Owner Supervision: Owners must remain with their dog at all times. If a dog shows signs of choking, distress, or coughing, the owner must immediately withdraw them from the competition.

Official Contest Rules

• The Setup: Each Corgi will have their own designated station featuring a shallow pan filled with water and dog-friendly wieners (or a safe equivalent). Stations will be spaced safely apart to prevent food guarding.
• The Start: Dogs must remain on a leash and be held by their owner behind the starting line until the official command is given.
• The Action: On the judge’s command, owners will release their Corgis to bob for and eat the wieners. Owners may encourage their dogs verbally but cannot touch the food, the pan, or the dog once the timer starts.
• Winning Criteria: The first Corgi to completely finish all the wieners in their pan wins.
• Final Authority: The Judge’s decision is final in all matters regarding timing, placement, and sportsmanship.
• The Prize & Cause: The winner will receive an official Winner’s Certificate. All proceeds from contest entry fees will be donated directly to a local dog rescue.

It’s time for our corgis to strut their stuff. Enter your pup in the costume contest and compete for bragging rights as one of the best-dressed officers in the Corgi Corps.

Creative, funny, historical, and military-inspired costumes are all welcome.

Contest Categories

• Best Military or Historical-Themed Human-Corgi Duo
• Best Human-Corgi Duo – Any theme!
• Best Group – Two or more corgis, any theme
• Silliest Costume – Individual corgis
• Best Military or Historical-Themed Costume – Individual corgis

Eligibility & Safety Requirements

• Costume Safety: Costumes must be safe, non-toxic, and comfortable for the dog.
• Leash Required: All dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under their owner’s control at all times.

Official Contest Rules

• Registration: No pre-registration is required. Simply report to the designated main arena or stage 10–15 minutes before the contest begins.
• Judging Criteria: Costumes will be judged based on originality, creativity, showmanship, cute factor, and overall memorable impression.
• Contest Categories: Entries will compete in the appropriate category listed above.
• Final Authority: Judges’ decisions are final.
