CAMPS

The Living History School Day is a full-day, outdoor experience designed to immerse students in U.S. military history through engaging, hands-on learning. The program features morning and afternoon sessions, with a lunch break in between.

Students will rotate through a variety of living history camps and stations, each offering a different perspective on U.S. military history from the Civil War through Vietnam. While specific stations and camp groupings may vary each year based on participating living history groups, every effort is made to provide a balanced and engaging experience.

To allow for meaningful interaction with presenters, students follow a timed rotation schedule, spending dedicated time at each station while moving efficiently through the program. Students may choose which stations to visit, but the rotation schedule ensures all groups have the opportunity to participate in multiple stations throughout the day.

A list of stations and a general location map will be emailed to registered participants approximately one week prior to the event.

The program is best suited for students in 2nd through 12th grade and is not designed for Kindergarten or 1st grade students.

Registration is limited to 300 students and will close on March 19 or when capacity is reached.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All participants will park at Santa’s Wonderland (Blitzen Lot) and enter the museum grounds from that location. Morning check-in and pre-event staging will take place at the large white tent near the upper entrance to the demonstration grounds. A parking map and arrival details will be emailed to registered participants prior to the event.

All activities take place outdoors. In the event of inclement weather (heavy rain or lightning), students will relocate to the main museum building to shelter in place. Please note this is approximately a 5–10 minute walk from the demonstration area.

Throughout the day, students will engage with a variety of living history displays, interacting with presenters and learning through demonstrations, equipment, and firsthand interpretation.

Each year, we welcome both returning and new participating groups. Recent additions have included:

• Texas Camel Corps
• WWI Buffalo Soldier camp display
• Texas National Guard 112th Cavalry (pre-1940)

In addition to these and other displays, students will have the opportunity to see elements of the museum’s collection of restored, functioning military vehicles, representing the period from WWII through the Vietnam era, and learn how they were used in service.

Past programs have also featured detailed encampments and demonstrations such as Camp Lili, a WWII U.S. Army Signal Corps field encampment. At this station, students can see communication equipment in use and learn how soldiers relayed information in the field during wartime.

Specific displays and demonstrations will vary each year based on participating living history groups.
