July 31 – Army Transportation Corps Established

July 31, 1942

After World War I, the Department of War decided it was necessary to form a Transportation Corps for the Army. Originally, the Quartermaster Corps and the Corps of Engineers controlled everything transportation related for the military. With World War II on the horizon, the Army Transportation Corps was established as a third and separate branch.

The primary role of the Army Transportation Corps is to oversee and plan regarding transportation. The Transportation Corps is in control of maneuvering vehicles and making sure Soldiers and cargo have safe, clear cut pathways.
