Fontainebleau is Liberated

August 23, 1944

On August 23, 1944, The United States 5th Infantry Division captured Fontainebleau, led by General George S. Patton. Starting in 1945 and ending in 1965, Fontainebleau was the seat of a Western Allied Headquarters.
